# AI for pupils and parents in Indonesia: using it honestly and safely

**Can pupils use AI for schoolwork, and how can they use it honestly and safely?**

Use artificial intelligence (AI) tools as a study assistant, not a substitute for effort: the joint seven-ministry guidelines set on 12 March 2026 call copying AI output and passing it off as your own plagiarism, and ban AI in exams. Follow the teacher’s rules for each task, say which parts AI helped with, and check facts again because AI can be wrong. Do not enter your full name, address, phone number or school name into an AI platform, and remember that accounts for children under 18 need parental consent.

## What to have ready

- The teacher’s rules on AI use for each type of task, which the guidelines say must be explained at the start of the school year or of each learning unit.
- An AI account suitable for the child’s age and set up with parental consent.
- A record of the work process: early drafts, sources read and the parts AI helped with.
- Reliable sources for checking facts, such as textbooks or official websites.

## Steps to use AI honestly and safely

1. **Ask about the AI rules for the task.** The seven-ministry guidelines put tasks into three zones: green (AI encouraged, with reflection), yellow (AI allowed for certain stages) and red (AI banned completely, such as in exams). Teachers must explain the zone. If it is unclear, ask before you start.
2. **Use AI to understand, not to copy.** AI can be used to find ideas, explain concepts or tidy up writing if the teacher allows it. Copying AI output and passing it off as your own is plagiarism, and Kemendikdasmen guidance gives cheating as an example of a breach of the pupil code of conduct.
3. **Check every fact.** AI answers can be wrong or made up (so-called hallucination). Check important facts, figures and quotes against textbooks or official sources before using them.
4. **Say how AI helped.** Write down which parts AI helped with and which are your own thinking. For yellow-zone tasks, the guidelines require a note on AI use and a signed integrity statement. Keep drafts and notes so you can show your working.
5. **Protect personal data.** Do not enter your full name, home address, phone number, school name, photos, passwords, financial details or family secrets into an AI platform. Do not upload photos of friends or teachers to face-editing or image-generating apps without permission.
6. **Parents: supervise according to age.** Young children should not interact with AI directly, primary-school children should use chatbots or image generators only with an adult, and secondary-school pupils should be encouraged to talk about their digital footprint and honesty. Make sure your child can still do their work without AI.

## Cost

Following this guide is free: the seven-ministry guidelines and the AI pocket book for pupils can be downloaded from the Kemendikdasmen website. AI tools themselves may be free or paid; check prices and subscription terms before entering payment details, and do not subscribe in a child’s name without parental consent.

Levels of AI use in schoolwork under the joint seven-ministry guidelines (12 March 2026). The teacher sets the zone for each task; checked 14 October 2026.

| Zone | What it means | Examples |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Green: encouraged, with reflection | AI is encouraged to practise human–machine collaboration and critical thinking | Analysing or comparing answers from several AI tools; preparing a presentation with AI help to find data and create visuals |
| Yellow: limited, with rules | AI is allowed for certain stages; the final work must be the pupil’s own | Essays: AI may be used for ideas and an outline, not to write paragraphs; a note on AI use and a signed integrity statement are required |
| Red: banned | AI is banned completely; the work is done alone | Daily tests, mid-term and end-of-term exams, and tasks that test understanding of basic concepts |

## Official rules and guidance on AI

The main guidance for pupils and parents is the joint decree of the Ministers of Home Affairs, Religious Affairs, Primary and Secondary Education, Higher Education, Science and Technology, Communications and Digital Affairs, Population and Family Development, and Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection on guidelines for using and teaching digital technology and artificial intelligence in formal, non-formal and informal education. It was set and took effect on 12 March 2026, and the Ministry of Religious Affairs also applies it in madrasahs and pesantren.

Permendikdasmen 13/2025 added Coding and Artificial Intelligence as an optional subject, introduced in stages from the 2025/2026 school year; schools offer it according to their resources and pupils choose it according to their interests. Kemendikdasmen has also published an AI pocket book for pupils that stresses honesty and data protection.

Outside school, Communications Minister Circular 9/2023 on Artificial Intelligence Ethics sets ethical values such as transparency, security and personal data protection for businesses and electronic system operators, not for pupils. As of 14 October 2026 we found no Presidential Regulation on AI ethics or a national AI roadmap in force; inter-ministry discussion of the drafts finished in May 2026 before they went to the President.

## Being honest in schoolwork

The seven-ministry guidelines name three values pupils must keep: no plagiarism, following the teacher’s policy for each type of task or assessment, and stating openly how AI was used where it is allowed. Teachers must explain that policy clearly, and may ask for early drafts, notes or an oral explanation to see how a pupil reached their answer.

The guidance for parents says children should always state when they have used AI help in schoolwork, use AI for brainstorming, explaining concepts or tidying writing, and never to copy a whole task. All important facts, data and quotes from AI must be checked against credible sources.

## Personal data, age limits and manipulated images

Law 27/2022 on Personal Data Protection treats children’s data as specific personal data, and processing it requires the consent of a parent or guardian (Article 25). The seven-ministry guidelines forbid pupils from giving their full name, home address, phone number, school name or other personal data to AI platforms, and forbid products from using pupils’ data to train AI without parental consent.

Account age limits follow PP TUNAS: children under 13 only on services designed specifically for children and rated low-risk, children aged 13 to 15 on low-risk services, and children aged 16 and 17 on any service, all with parental consent. Also check the age limit in the AI tool’s own terms of service.

The same guidelines class AI-based digital manipulation, such as deepfakes, voice manipulation or synthetic images that mislead or damage someone’s reputation, as harmful content. If a photo of your child or their friend is edited to humiliate them, report it to the school, the platform and aduankonten.id; if the image is sexual, do not save or forward it and contact the police and SAPA 129 straight away.

## Things to check carefully

- Copying an AI answer and handing it in as your own work.
- Trusting facts, figures or quotes from AI without checking the source.
- Entering your full name, address, phone number, school name, photos or passwords into a chatbot.
- Uploading photos of friends or teachers to face-editing or image-generating apps without permission. Manipulated images that humiliate someone can be treated by the school as psychological violence.
- Letting a primary-school child use a chatbot alone or on a parent’s account.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can pupils use AI for schoolwork?

Yes, if the teacher allows it for that task. The seven-ministry guidelines put tasks into green, yellow and red zones, and AI is banned completely in daily tests and mid-term and end-of-term exams. Any part AI helped with must be stated.

### Does using AI count as cheating?

It can, if AI output is copied and passed off as your own, or used on a task where AI is banned. The seven-ministry guidelines call this plagiarism, and Kemendikdasmen guidance classes cheating as a breach of the pupil code of conduct. Using AI for ideas or explanations, where allowed and declared, is not cheating.

### What is the minimum age for using an AI chatbot?

There is no single figure; account age limits follow PP TUNAS. Children under 13 may only have accounts on low-risk services designed specifically for children, with parental consent. The seven-ministry guidelines also say young children should not interact with AI directly and primary-school children should use chatbots only with an adult.

### What data should never be entered into AI?

Your full name, home address, phone number, school name, photos, passwords, financial details and family secrets. The seven-ministry guidelines forbid pupils from giving personal data to AI platforms, and Kemendikdasmen’s pocket book suggests using made-up example data or removing sensitive details before asking.

### Is AI taught at school?

Yes, as an optional subject. Permendikdasmen 13/2025 provides for Coding and Artificial Intelligence to be introduced in stages from the 2025/2026 school year in primary and secondary education. Schools offer it according to their resources, and pupils choose it according to their interests.

### What should I do if my child’s photo has been edited with AI to humiliate them?

Keep the link and account name, then report it to the school, the platform and aduankonten.id. If the image is sexual, do not save or forward it; call the police on 110 and contact SAPA 129 (phone 129 or WhatsApp 08-111-129-129). Support your child and do not blame them.

### Are there government rules on AI ethics?

Yes, but for businesses: Communications Minister Circular 9/2023 on Artificial Intelligence Ethics sets values such as transparency, security and personal data protection. For schools and families, the reference is the 2026 seven-ministry guidelines. We found no Presidential Regulation on AI ethics in force as of 14 October 2026.
