Cost of living and moving to another Indonesian city

Compare housing, transport, internet, healthcare access and moving costs with household needs, official BPS context, and BMKG and BNPB information.

English edition. Official forms and source documents may be in Indonesian.

QUICK ANSWER

Compare monthly living costs separately from the money needed when moving. Use prices in the intended neighbourhood and check transport, internet, healthcare and disaster risks. BPS average expenditure gives regional context, not a mandatory budget for every household.

What to prepare

  • Two or three candidate neighbourhoods, household size and work/school locations.
  • Current spending and dependable net income.
  • Written rent quotes, included bills, deposits and payment periods.
  • Specific needs such as step-free access, healthcare, schooling or reliable work connectivity.

Steps you can follow

  1. Compare equivalent needs

Use comparable housing, occupancy and commuting assumptions. A single room and a family house are different budgets. Date each quote.

  2. Add monthly expenses

Include rent, food, utilities, internet, transport, health, education and obligations. Divide annual rent by 12 for comparison, but record the full upfront payment.

  3. Separate initial costs

Include removals, travel, deposits, connection fees and necessary equipment. Note due dates and refund terms without counting the same rent twice.

  4. Check neighbourhood and commute

Visit where possible. Try routes at usual travel times and record both cost and time; cheaper rent may mean more expensive travel.

  5. Test connectivity and services

Confirm internet coverage at the exact address and test video calls during working hours. Check installation, contract and usage limits. Review local healthcare and your registered FKTP in Mobile JKN.

  6. Compare with available funds

Test the budget against a delayed payment or higher commute cost. Adjust location or housing before agreeing to unaffordable commitments.

Monthly expenses and upfront moving costs

There is no single living-cost figure for all residents of a city. Use current rupiah quotes and your own needs. The comparison below separates recurring expenses from money needed at the move.

Compare each possible place to live
ItemMonthlyWhen moving
HousingMonthly equivalent of rent and local chargesAdvance rent, deposit and payment dates
Food and household needsGroceries for household sizeInitial supplies you do not already own
TransportRegular fares, parking or fuelTravel tickets and removals

Health and educationRecurring family needsInitial charges confirmed with the provider

Confirm prices with the provider and property owner. This is a planning checklist, not an official tariff or a quoted city budget.

Read BPS expenditure statistics correctly

BPS publishes average monthly food and non-food expenditure per capita, meaning per person. Match the year, geography, rupiah unit and urban/rural coverage when comparing.

The average describes the population covered by the data. It is not a rental-price list or a guaranteed minimum budget. Use it as context and calculate your actual household needs; a provincial average is not every neighbourhood’s price.

Weather, air quality and location risk

Check BMKG forecasts for visits and moving day. Read air-quality observations and warnings with their location and timestamp; one observation does not describe the whole year.

Use BNPB inaRISK for initial regional hazard context, supplemented by local BPBD information, access conditions and evacuation routes. A risk map does not guarantee the safety of a specific building.

Check the connection at the address

A citywide speed estimate or review does not establish the connection in a particular room. Ask to test at the property, check the work area and ask residents about busy hours. Plan backup connectivity according to your work needs.

If using a coworking space, include membership, transport and any call-room charges; they may not be included in rent.

Update documents and services

List services to confirm after an address change: population documents, BPJS, school and accounts using the address. Follow Dukcapil requirements for the actual reason behind KK or KTP-el changes; one update need not change every system.

For a primary-care facility change, check available options and the effective date with BPJS. Plan these arrangements before moving day.

Things to check carefully

  • Do not treat tourist or expatriate budgets as a local household standard.
  • Compare rent periods, extra bills and deposits.
  • Community safety, internet or quality-of-life scores are not official assessments.
  • Verify the property, the person letting it and the written agreement before paying.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a month in a city cost?

It depends on housing, household members, transport and other needs. Collect local quotes and add every relevant item; one city average is insufficient.

Is BPS expenditure the same as my family budget?

No. Per-capita statistics cover a particular population and area. Use them for context while calculating actual needs.

Are Nomads city ratings suitable for Indonesian residents?

They can suggest questions to ask, but nomad, expatriate, family and local budget categories differ. Check the methodology and date, and confirm your own needs with local and official information.

What should remote workers check?

Test at the accommodation during working hours, check backup signal, plan costs, quiet space and travel. A city rating cannot ensure the connection at one address.
