Marriage and divorce in Indonesia

Muslim marriages are registered through KUA; other couples use civil registration under applicable rules. The minimum marriage age is 19 for both parties, with court dispensation for an exception. Divorce requires court proceedings; plan for court charges and children’s rights.

Choose the registry
Muslim couples consult the relevant KUA; other couples check civil-registration and religious requirements.
Check requirements and fees
For KUA, check SIMKAH, appointments, documents and whether the ceremony is in the office during working hours or elsewhere.
If divorcing, identify the court
Muslim spouses generally use the Religious Court; others use the District Court. Confirm jurisdiction and documents with the court.
Plan financial outcomes
Address relevant child support, care and joint-property claims; follow the judgment and update family documents.
Costs and timing
Marriage at a KUA office during working hours is Rp0; outside the office or hours generally carries a Rp600,000 government charge, with certain exceptions. Divorce court costs vary by court and case; e-Court provides an advance cost estimate.

Divorce, property and children
Divorce does not automatically settle every obligation. Record assets, debts, accounts and child costs. Joint-property and maintenance rights follow applicable law and the court order; there is no universal percentage formula.

Is a private agreement enough for divorce?
